For centuries, African tribal cultures have worn beads made from snake vertebrae to ward off bad luck and to protect themselves from evil spirits. Those snake beads, as they were called, became a form of currency in trading with Europeans, and beginning in the early twentieth century they were recreated in glass by European glass makers. Today, Melissa uses these colorful gemstone beads to create a celebration of the traditional and the contemporary, as she brings together ancient beliefs and modern fashion.
